Cards, flowers, the ubiquitous breakfast in bed… coming to a household near you this Sunday morning!
It is a beautiful and important thing to celebrate mothers. But you know what’s coming next. It is not enough. It’s not enough to give mothers a Hallmark day once a year and denigrate, discriminate and largely ignore their contributions for the rest of the time.
This Mother’s Day, consider a gift that magnifies the work of mothers throughout the United States and around the world.
- Every Mother Counts is a maternal advocacy non-profit started by Christy Turlington and a team of incredible people, to educate and save mothers all over the world. Turlington’s landmark documentary, No Woman, No Cry will be screening for the first time on television this weekend on the OWN. Details here. You can also support their work with a Starbucks Every Mother Counts CD, on sale at Starbacks until Monday. I bought it yesterday and am loving some big name artists singing with their mother hearts. I saw Turlington’s film last August and wrote about it at the time. It is stunning. And it will change you.
- Mothers Acting Up was formed by a group of women to inspire and act! As they entered motherhood, each discovered a deep sense of being bound to all mothers and children globally. Passionate about taking action, MUP offers easy local ways to take do something on behalf of mothers everywhere.
- MomsRising.org focuses on US domestic public policy advocacy on behalf of mothers and children. The coolest free mother’s day gift you’ll find this year is their new movie, about a mother you love! Send it to all your favorite mothers! Here’s the one they made about me :).
- The ONE Campaign is championing enhanced funding for lifesaving vaccines. I co-hosted a chat yesterday on The Motherhood and saw ONE’s fabulous new video with Former First Lady Laura Bush. Every mother can make a difference. Take a look at Mrs Bush’s invitation to join the campaign. “They are not asking for your money. They are asking for your voice.” Got to love that!
Closer to Home
Helping mothers across the planet does not always make those long nights and endless struggles feel much easier to bear. What about contemporary mothering support, training and meaningful development in your world, your reality (or for a mother you love)? I have been working with The Power of Moms and recently joined their board. I continue to be impressed with these women. They are smart, loving and utterly committed in their mothering and their compassion for the lonely road many bear. There’s a wealth of resources and truly helpful information on the site and inexpensive tools to help you become the woman and mother you were meant to be.
I wrote the anchor essay and edited this month’s Learning Circle Chapter, from our forthcoming book (working title) The 12 Powers of Motherhood. The chapter is Awake, Alive and Present: The Power of Intention. You can start or join a Learning Circle here.* It’s kind of like a super-focused book club and you will absolutely LOVE it.
Charity and Love: Make It Real
My spiritual life is the ultimate defining force in my mothering. The women’s organization of my faith has as its motto, “Charity Never Faileth”. There is so much to do. So many to love, and lift and nurture. One person can make a difference. One mother can change her family, her neighborhood, her workplace, her world.
Use your voice. Use your money. And go forth and do!
What’s your Mother’s Day gift to the world?
